This narrative review synthesized evidence from prospective epidemiological cohort studies in more than a dozen populations and dietary studies to examine potential relationships between low serum cholesterol levels, dietary cholesterol intake, and cancer risk or mortality.
What was found
No quantitative effect sizes, hazard ratios, or pooled statistical values were reported in the abstract. Prospective cohort studies showed inconsistent findings: several demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between serum cholesterol and cancer risk or mortality, while many others failed to show any association. Dietary investigations suggested that higher cholesterol intake was associated with cancer, rather than lower intake. The author concluded that low blood cholesterol does not directly cause cancer and may merely serve as a non-causal marker in a small subset of males.
Why it matters
The review addresses clinical and public health concerns about potential carcinogenic risks of low cholesterol, finding that evidence does not contradict recommendations to lower elevated cholesterol.
Limits
