What was done
Autoradiographic localization was performed in rats using 3H-labeled 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 to detect binding sites across the central nervous system. Specificity of neuronal binding in the forebrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord was tested by competitive displacement with unlabeled 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 versus 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical data. It observed nuclear retention and concentration of radioactivity in select neurons of the rat forebrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord. This nuclear retention was prevented by treatment with unlabeled 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, but not by 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.
Why it matters
This study provides early histological evidence that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 targets specific central nervous system neurons, suggesting direct central endocrine or neuromodulatory roles for vitamin D.
