Analyzed sleep-wake data from 22 normal infants to test deductions derived from the hypothesis that active (REM) sleep serves an endogenous functional role in stimulating the central nervous system to facilitate growth and maturation.

The amount of time spent in the behavioral state of Quiet Alert correlated -0.82 with the state of Active Sleep. The correlation was reported to be independent of maturational changes in the infants.
