What was found
Limb muscles in older individuals were 25-35% smaller and had significantly more fat and connective tissue than in younger individuals. Type 2 (fast-twitch) fibers were smaller in older adults, whereas type 1 (slow-twitch) fiber size was much less affected. Whole muscle cross-sections showed a significantly smaller total number of muscle fibers, a significantly lower relative type 2 fiber area, and a significant increase in fiber type grouping with advancing age.
Why it matters
This review outlines the structural etiology of sarcopenia, attributing muscle atrophy to both a reduction in fiber number and preferential fast-twitch fiber shrinkage linked in part to progressive denervation.
