What was done
Two-month-old male BALB/c mice were assigned to either ad libitum feeding or food restriction (60% of ad libitum calories) for 2 months. Diurnal elevation of plasma corticosterone was measured after 1 month. Two weeks later, acute inflammation was induced by injecting 20 microliters of 4% carrageenan into a hind foot pad, and subsequent edema was monitored.
What was found
Diurnal elevation of plasma corticosterone was threefold higher in food-restricted mice compared to ad libitum controls. Peak edema did not differ between groups, but edema was reduced at onset and resolved earlier in food-restricted mice. The abstract does not report exact animal numbers, absolute corticosterone levels, raw edema volumes, or p-values.
Why it matters
This study provides experimental evidence in rodents that dietary restriction enhances diurnal glucocorticoid activity and accelerates the resolution of acute inflammation, suggesting a hormonal mechanism for caloric restriction effects.
Limits
This is an animal study in young male BALB/c mice with no human data. Sample sizes, quantitative edema measurements, and statistical metrics are not reported in the abstract, and only a single acute chemical inflammatory challenge was tested.
