What was done

Researchers investigated whether olfactory cues mediate reproductive suppression in subordinate female common marmoset monkeys (*Callithrix jacchus*). Subordinate females received ablation of the vomeronasal organ (n = 3), the main olfactory epithelium (n = 4), or both (n = 5), and were evaluated for ovulation and plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) during 7 weeks of co-housing with their dominant female. Intact dominant females with olfactory lesions were also tested to verify normal cyclicity. Additionally, olfactory-lesioned subordinate females kept in visual-only contact with their dominant female (n = 6) were compared against intact subordinates completely isolated from dominant females (n = 8) for time to first ovulation following physical separation.

What was found

Neither vomeronasal ablation, main olfactory ablation, nor combined lesions induced ovulation or altered plasma LH concentrations in subordinate females housed with their dominant female over 7 weeks. Dominant females with olfactory lesions maintained normal ovarian cycle lengths. Olfactory-lesioned subordinates maintained in visual-only contact with the dominant female had a significantly delayed onset of ovulation (29.1 ± 9.3 days, mean ± SEM) compared to completely isolated intact subordinates (10.8 ± 1.3 days, P < 0.05).

Why it matters

This study demonstrates that reproductive suppression in subordinate marmosets is not driven exclusively by olfactory or pheromonal signaling. Instead, social suppression of ovulation relies on multimodal inputs, including visual and behavioral cues.

Limits

Group sizes were very small across experimental conditions (n = 3 to 8), precluding robust statistical precision. The abstract does not isolate other potential sensory modalities, such as auditory or vocal cues.
