Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed on human preimplantation embryos to evaluate the transcription timing of two paternal Y-chromosome genes, ZFY and SRY, from early post-insemination stages up to the blastocyst stage.

Qualitatively, ZFY transcripts were detected at the pronucleate stage (20–24 hours post-insemination in vitro) and intermediate stages up to the blastocyst stage.
