What was done

In vivo microdialysis was used to monitor dopamine (DA) transmission and its metabolites (dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and homovanillic acid) in the nucleus accumbens of male rats during exposure to an estrous female behind a screen, copulation, sexual satiety, and subsequent reinitiation of sexual behavior with a novel receptive female.

What was found

The abstract reports directional findings without numerical values. Nucleus accumbens DA efflux increased significantly during presentation of an estrous female behind a screen and during copulation. DA levels returned to baseline at sexual satiety, whereas metabolite levels remained elevated. Presenting a novel receptive female behind a screen caused a slight increase in DA efflux, which increased significantly further during renewed copulation.

Why it matters

The study directly links dynamic fluctuations in mesolimbic dopamine transmission to the Coolidge effect in male rats, demonstrating that sensory novelty can trigger renewed dopamine release and motivated sexual behavior despite recent satiety.
