What was done

Twenty-two cholecystectomized Göttingen minipigs with common bile duct catheterization were tested in the conscious state. Investigators measured biliary bicarbonate secretion, bile volume, and plasma concentrations of secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK) following intraduodenal hydrochloric acid infusion, intravenous secretin, intravenous pentagastrin, and meal feeding, with and without duodenal exclusion of bile salts.

What was found

The abstract reports directional and significance findings without providing exact numerical values or effect sizes. Intraduodenal HCl infusion, intravenous secretin, and intravenous pentagastrin significantly increased plasma secretin levels and hepatic bicarbonate output. Postprandially, hepatic bicarbonate secretion, plasma CCK, and plasma secretin all increased. Excluding bile salts from the duodenum abolished the postprandial increase in bile volume, diminished secretin release, and increased CCK release in both fasting and fed states.

Why it matters

It demonstrates that endogenous secretin plays an active physiological role in regulating biliary bicarbonate secretion, suggesting a direct contribution of bile to duodenal acid neutralization in pigs.

Limits

The study was performed entirely in a non-human model (minipigs) with surgically altered anatomy (cholecystectomy and bile duct catheterization). The abstract reports no numerical measurements, variance estimates, or exact p-values.
