The proxy data were integrated with documentary and archaeological evidence to assess whether environmental and vegetation changes were driven primarily by climate fluctuations or human land-use practices.
What was found
Stable isotope data showed marked shifts in summer drought intensity and winter-spring rainfall, but these shifts did not match the timing of pollen-derived vegetation and land-use changes. Four human-driven landscape phases were identified: (i) an early Byzantine agrarian landscape; (ii) woodland recovery and land abandonment from AD 670 to 950 during Arab invasions; (iii) re-establishment of cereal agriculture and pastoralism from c. AD 950 through Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods; and (iv) agricultural intensification from AD 1830 to present. Charcoal fluxes indicated landscape fires were most frequent during periods of abandonment with higher fuel loads. The abstract reports no numerical values or statistical effect sizes.
