What was done

Nine digital audio player models and 20 earphones were evaluated to assess maximum output levels according to the European standard BS EN 50332. The researchers investigated the impact of earphone seal, output voltage, earphone sensitivity, and recorded music levels on listener sound exposure. They also tested simplified field measurement methods using a sound level meter and evaluated sound levels at a distance of 0.25 m to assess bystander perception.

What was found

Standard playback levels at maximum volume ranged from 101 to 107 dBA. Depending on earphone seal, device output voltage, earphone sensitivity, and music recording level, estimated listener sound exposure varied widely from 79 to 125 dBA. Intra-concha earbuds showed greater potential for high sound levels due to tighter acoustic coupling. Noise measurements at 0.25 m indicated that bystanders cannot reliably gauge the sound level experienced by the listener.
