Using a definition of language encompassing external speech production and internal cognition/symbolism, the review synthesized paleontological and archaeological data across multiple proxies: brain volume and structure, vocal tract morphology, faunal assemblage composition, intra-site spatial diversification, burial practices, personal ornamentation, and art.
What was found
The abstract reports no quantitative metrics or effect sizes. The review found no fossil or archaeological evidence supporting a qualitative shift in language capacity aligned with modern human emergence (200,000–100,000 years before present) or the arrival of modern humans in Western Europe (40,000–30,000 years before present). Instead, evidence suggests complex language capabilities originated much earlier, coinciding with the evolution of the genus Homo.
Why it matters
This paper challenges models that treat symbolic language as the singular, late-emerging evolutionary driver separating anatomically modern humans from ancestral hominids, arguing instead for a deeper evolutionary timeline for linguistic ability.
Limits
The abstract provides no sample sizes or systematic criteria for study selection. Conclusions rely entirely on indirect archaeological and anatomical proxies, which cannot directly capture spoken language or early cognitive processing.
