What was done

What was found

The population living below replacement fertility averaged 1.6 children per woman, while the population above replacement averaged 3.6 children. Approximately one-sixth of the global population lived in areas with fertility below 1.5. Developed nations comprised less than half of the approximately 3 billion people with sub-replacement fertility, with major developing populations (including Brazil, Lebanon, Thailand, Tunisia, and 200 million people in India) also below 2.1. Conversely, nearly 20% of the global population maintained fertility rates of 4.0 or higher, primarily concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of the Arabian Peninsula, northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
