What was done
Male rats underwent object recognition training and received post-training corticosterone, comparing naïve rats against rats previously habituated to the context to reduce novelty-induced emotional arousal. Memory was tested at 24 hours. To evaluate adrenergic dependency, the beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol was administered systemically or directly into the basolateral amygdala (BLA). In habituated rats, corticosterone was tested alongside the alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine (to stimulate norepinephrine release), and BLA activation was measured by phosphorylated cAMP response element binding (pCREB) immunoreactivity.
What was found
The abstract reports no numerical metrics or p-values. Directionally, corticosterone enhanced 24-hour memory retention in naïve rats but had no enhancing effect in context-habituated rats. Both systemic and intra-BLA propranolol blocked the memory-enhancing effect of corticosterone. In habituated rats, corticosterone enhanced memory and elevated BLA pCREB immunoreactivity only when co-administered with yohimbine.
Why it matters
