Effects of Detectable Warnings on Individuals with Mobility Impairments

Twenty-one wheelchair users were recruited to negotiate curb ramps installed with and without truncated dome detectable warning surfaces in a controlled setting. Participants rated their perception of safety and ease of ramp negotiation using a Likert-type instrument. In addition, two raters evaluated videotaped performances for more than half of the participants, and differences between conditions were assessed via MANOVA.
