They evaluated associations between child BLLs and spatial-temporal exposure variables, including distance and wind direction (predominantly east) relative to the airport, piston-engine aircraft (PEA) traffic volume, quantities of leaded aviation gasoline (avgas) sold, pandemic-related air traffic contractions, and local atmospheric lead measurements.
What was found
Child BLLs increased with closer proximity to the airport and were higher among children residing east and downwind. BLLs rose with PEA traffic and avgas sales, showing an increase of approximately 0.72 μg/dL among proximate children during periods of maximum PEA traffic. Child BLLs decreased significantly during pandemic-related PEA traffic contractions and increased with measured atmospheric lead concentrations at the airport.
Why it matters
Leaded aviation gasoline used by piston-engine aircraft is the primary source of airborne lead emissions in the United States. This study provides empirical evidence linking airport operations and avgas consumption directly to elevated blood lead burdens in surrounding pediatric populations.
