According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, total entropy in an isolated system (such as the universe) cannot decrease and irreversible physical processes continually generate entropy. While open systems (such as living organisms) can locally reduce their internal entropy by exchanging energy and matter with their environment, they do so at the cost of increasing the net entropy of the universe. Consequently, physical entropy production cannot be stopped or prevented overall.
