The primary study behind this claim (Kaul et al., 2010) examined only 7 long-term experienced meditators who engaged in multiple hours of daily practice, finding they had lower total sleep duration without vigilance decrements compared to controls. The authors explicitly concluded that whether meditation can causally replace sleep or pay off sleep debt remains under investigation. There are no randomized controlled trials demonstrating that 40 to 60 minutes of daily meditation reduces biological sleep requirements by 2 hours.

Major systematic reviews and meta-analyses (such as Goyal et al., 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine) screened tens of thousands of citations and identified only dozens to hundreds of randomized trials meeting rigorous methodological standards (such as active control comparisons). Furthermore, while mindfulness-based interventions demonstrate small to moderate improvements in anxiety, depression, and psychological stress, evidence for improvements in attention/focus, positive mood, and cognitive performance is more limited, mixed, or of lower certainty.
