The authors reported that both resting and stimulated mast cells synthesize and release melatonin, contain the necessary machinery for melatonin synthesis, and express MT1 and MT2 membrane receptors. No quantitative metrics or numbers were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study provides evidence that mast cells are an extrapineal source of melatonin that also possess melatonin receptors, suggesting a possible autocrine or paracrine role in modulating inflammatory responses.
Limits
