The consensus defines carotid artery plaque as a focal structure encroaching into the arterial lumen by at least 0.5 mm, by 50% of the surrounding IMT value, or having a thickness >1.5 mm measured from the media-adventitia interface to the intima-lumen interface. It established criteria to differentiate early plaque formation from IMT thickening to harmonize data collection across trials.
