What was done

Fifty-five healthy adolescents aged 15–19 years (25 males) reporting habitual short weekday sleep were randomized to a Sleep Restriction group (5 h time in bed) or a Control group (9 h time in bed) in a 2-week quasi-laboratory protocol at a boarding school. The study included 3 baseline nights (9 h time in bed), 7 nights of sleep manipulation, and 3 recovery nights (9 h time in bed). Polysomnography was recorded on two baseline, three manipulation, and two recovery nights.

What was found

The abstract reports directional findings without specific numerical values. Total slow-wave sleep (SWS) duration was preserved across sleep restriction nights relative to 9 h baseline, while other sleep stages were reduced. Within the first 5 h of sleep opportunity, sleep-restricted participants had reduced N1 duration and wake after sleep onset, and increased total sleep time (TST), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and SWS relative to baseline. Total REM sleep, N2, and TST duration remained elevated above baseline levels through the third recovery night.

Why it matters

The study shows that cumulative weekday sleep restriction in teenagers creates sleep architecture disruptions that are not fully reversed by three full nights of recovery sleep.

Limits

The abstract reports no numerical data, confidence intervals, or exact p-values. Polysomnography was sampled on selected nights rather than measured continuously across all protocol nights, and findings from this adolescent boarding school cohort may not generalize to other age groups.
