Moderate to severe gambling problems and traumatic brain injury: A population-based study.

What was done
Analyzed data from a 2015–2016 cross-sectional general population telephone survey of adults aged 18 and older in Ontario, Canada (N = 3,809). Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and moderate to severe problem gambling while controlling for hazardous drinking, psychological distress, and educational attainment.
What was found
A history of TBI was independently associated with moderate to severe problem gambling (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.80). Problem gambling was also significantly associated with psychological distress (AOR = 2.74), hazardous drinking (AOR = 2.69), and lower educational levels (AOR = 0.37). Specific confidence intervals and exact prevalence counts were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
Shows that the association between TBI and severe problem gambling persists in a representative general population sample even when controlling for common shared confounders like alcohol misuse and psychological distress.
Limits
The cross-sectional design cannot establish causality or determine whether TBI preceded the onset of gambling problems. All data were collected via telephone self-report, risking recall and social desirability biases, and the abstract omits confidence intervals and injury severity details.
