Epidemiology of COVID-19 Among Children in China.

What was done
Nationwide case series of 2,135 pediatric patients with COVID-19 reported to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention between January 16, 2020, and February 8, 2020. Epidemic curves were constructed based on illness onset and diagnosis dates, and onset-to-diagnosis intervals were modeled using a log-normal distribution.
What was found
Among 2,135 pediatric patients, 728 (34.1%) were laboratory-confirmed and 1,407 (65.9%) were suspected cases. The median age was 7 years (interquartile range: 2 to 13 years), and 1,208 patients (56.6%) were boys. More than 90% of all patients had asymptomatic, mild, or moderate cases. The median time from symptom onset to diagnosis was 2 days (range: 0 to 42 days). Case counts increased rapidly in the early epidemic stage before steadily decreasing, with most cases concentrated in Hubei province.
Why it matters
This study provided early nationwide evidence that pediatric COVID-19 cases were predominantly mild or moderate compared to adult presentations, while confirming susceptibility across all pediatric age groups.
Limits
The majority of cases (65.9%) were clinically suspected rather than laboratory-confirmed. As a surveillance case series, the abstract does not report specific clinical outcomes, mortality, laboratory findings, or underlying comorbidities, and includes no uninfected comparison cohort.
