What was done
A cross-sectional study evaluated how the fading affect bias—where negative emotional intensity fades faster than positive intensity in autobiographical memory—varies across the adult lifespan. A sample of 2,062 adults aged 18 to 96 years (60.67% women, 75.46% with university entrance diplomas, 95.68% German native speakers) completed a free recall task for three positive and three negative autobiographical memories. Participants rated affect intensity retrospectively for both the time of occurrence and current recall. Latent change score models were used to model affect intensity changes and an overall latent fading affect bias score while controlling for time since the event and initial affect intensity.
What was found
The magnitude of the fading affect bias followed a U-shaped function across age, with a low point at age 40 and a maximum at the oldest ages in the sample. Adjusting for time elapsed since the event and initial affect intensity further increased the bias observed at older ages. Why it matters
The study adds empirical support for socioemotional selectivity theory and the strength and vulnerability integration model, suggesting that emotional regulation processes that diminish negative memory affect are strongest in late adulthood.
