A clinical trial administering ketamine versus placebo under surgical anesthesia to depressed patients showed that the antidepressant effect was predicted by the patients' belief that they received ketamine rather than actual drug administration.
"Do you know this interesting study, another colleague of yours, Boris Heifets? He's a neuroanesthesiologist at Stanford Med School... Came out a couple of years ago with ketamine. A triple-masked randomized controlled trial led by Boris Heifets' group evaluated intravenous ketamine versus placebo (saline) administered during routine surgical anesthesia in 40 patients with major depressive disorder (Nature Mental Health, 2023).
