While gastric distension from mechanical volume expansion (such as drinking a large volume of liquid or inflating a gastric balloon) can suppress circulating ghrelin levels, animal and human research demonstrates that postprandial ghrelin suppression is primarily driven by nutrient sensing and absorption in the small intestine rather than gastric stretch alone.
